Focal reducer compatibility: what to check first

A reducer changes several things at once

A focal reducer shortens effective focal length and usually makes the system faster. That sounds simple, but it also changes field of view, pixel scale, spacing requirements, and the size of the corrected image circle.

Run the new effective focal length through the pixel-scale and field-of-view checks before you buy. The result will tell you whether the reducer solves the problem you actually have.

Back focus is not optional

Reducers are designed around a specified distance from the reducer shoulder to the camera sensor. The camera body, filter wheel, filters, adapters, and spacers all count toward that distance.

A reducer that is mechanically attached but incorrectly spaced may produce bloated stars, curved corners, or a field that looks fine in the center and poor at the edges.

Watch the image circle

A reducer can illuminate a smaller field than your camera sensor expects. If the sensor is too large, corner darkening may be unavoidable. Check the reducer documentation and compare its corrected circle with the active sensor area.
