Why pixel scale matters before you buy equipment

The basic idea

Pixel scale is the amount of sky covered by one camera pixel, usually expressed in arcseconds per pixel. Smaller numbers record finer detail, but they also demand better seeing, focus, tracking, and guiding.

Calculate it from focal length and pixel pitch before comparing cameras. This gives you a useful reality check before money changes hands.

Do not chase the smallest number

Oversampling can make stars spread across more pixels without adding real detail. Undersampling can make fine stars and small structures harder to separate. There is no universal perfect value because local seeing and the target matter.

Use the sampling checker with a realistic seeing estimate. If the result is not ideal, consider a different focal length, reducer, binning strategy, or target type.

Pair pixel scale with field of view

Pixel scale tells you about detail; field of view tells you what fits in the frame. You need both numbers before deciding whether a setup is practical.
